GEDCOM Health Check
Free. Upload a GEDCOM file (5.5, 5.5.1 or 7.0) and get an instant report: record counts, duplicate people, malformed and ambiguous dates, character-set problems, broken links between records, and chronology that cannot be right.
What it checks
- Structure — GEDCOM version, header, trailer, line format, level jumps, over-long lines, unknown tags.
- Character set — whether the declared CHAR (ANSEL, UTF-8, ANSI…) matches what is actually in the file, the usual cause of garbled accents in names like Gagné or Ó Súilleabháin.
- Dates — every DATE line is parsed against the GEDCOM grammar; non-standard, ambiguous (03/04/1850), impossible (30 FEB) and future dates are listed.
- Links — pointers to individuals, families, sources, notes and media that do not exist; missing back-links; unreferenced records.
- People — exact and probable duplicate individuals, missing names or sex, isolated individuals, a count of people who may be living.
- Chronology — death before birth, children older than parents, parents under 12 or mothers over 55 at a birth, marriages after death, ages over 120.
